Predicting economic recessions

Over a 50 year period the mean prediction of the Survey of Professional Forecasters in the US has never predicted a recession one year ahead. The failure of conventional approaches to predict the crisis in the late 2000s is notorious.

Here, in a paper posted on arXiv we show how it could have been anticipated in the summer of 2007. We use a small set of monetary variables and a random forest algorithm.
